About Louis Bull Tribe

Louis Bull Tribe is a Cree Nation in Treaty 6 territory, based in Maskwacis, Alberta, that makes decisions with the guidance of its Elders.

kisipatnahk (ᑭᓭ ᐸᑎᓇᕽ) (High or steep hill) — Louis Bull Tribe, known in Cree as kisipatnahk (ᑭᓭ ᐸᑎᓇᕽ), meaning "high or steep hill", is a Cree Nation in Treaty 6 territory. On September 25, 1877, Chief Bobtail signed an adhesion to Treaty Six, and that signature also covered the future Louis Bull Band. The band was once part of the Ermineskin Band. It got its own reserve in 1909 and is named after one of its first chiefs.

The Tribe's lands lie about 16 kilometres southwest of Wetaskiwin, and its band office is in Maskwacis. The Nation controls one reserve and shares ownership of another:

  • Louis Bull 138B
  • Pigeon Lake 138A (shared)

A Chief and six Council members govern the Tribe, and it belongs to the Maskwacis Cree Tribal Council. Community development and guidance from Elders shape its decisions. Louis Bull Tribe was the first Nation in Treaty 6 to put its own child and family services law into force. That law, the AMO Law, aims to protect the Tribe's Treaty, traditions, language, culture and sovereign rights. A 2023 agreement with the federal government supports it.

Cree culture is part of everyday community life. When the Tribe's school opened, the celebration included a pipe ceremony, a hoop dancer, traditional dancers and a local drum group. The Nation's businesses include Bear Hills Casino & Travel Resort, a gas bar and convenience store, and Pigeon Lake Golf Club and RV Park.
